PUL-I-ALAM (Pajhwok): Unidentified gunmen have shot dead the deputy chairman of the Ulemainfo-icon Council for central Logar province, an official said on Wednesday.

Shamshad Laraway, the governor’s spokesman, told Pajhwok Afghan News that Maulviinfo-icon Amir Jan, who was also prayer leader at the main Pul-i-Alam mosqueinfo-icon, was killed on Tuesday night.

He said the incident took place in Khamando area and security forces had been tasked to arrest the assailants at the earliest possible.

Provincial Council Chairman Hasibullah Stanikzai condemned the killing of Amir Jan and asked the security forces to ensure the protection of religious scholars.

“Those who carried out the attack on Amirjan and killed him are actually ignorant of Islamic teachings,” he remarked, calling for bringing the killers to justice.

Syed Shah, a resident of the area, said the gunmen killed Maulvi Amir Jan inside the mosque. There was no immediate claim of responsibility for the assault.
