May 13, 2019 - 20:50

SHARANA (Pajhwok): Ten police have been killed and several others wounded during a clash with Talibaninfo-icon insurgents in the Mata Khan district of southeastern Paktika province,  a hospital source said on Monday.

The clash broke out late Sunday night after the Taliban gunmen stormed a police post, Paktika police spokesman Shah Mohammad Aryun confirmed to Pajhwok Afghan News.

He said the police personnel put up stiff resistance to the attack, killing six attackers and injuring five others and confiscated their weapons.

He said three policemen were killed and their Humvee vehicle destroyed in the attack.

But a source in the civil hospital in Sharana, the provincial capital, said they had been delivered ten dead bodies and another ten injured policemen. He did not provide further details.

A resident of Maryan village where the clash took place told Pajhwok on the condition of anonymity that the clash was fierce that continued until Monday morning. He had no information about casualties.

The Taliban also confirmed the clash, with their spokesman Zabihullah Mujahid saying the fighters stormed a police post in the Maryan village, killing nine police. One policeman was captured alive and their weapons and ammunition seized.

The attack in Mata Khan followed another attack the same night on security posts along the Paktia-Paktika highway, but no information about casualties could be ascertained as of yet.
