PESHAWAR (Pajhwok): The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) it has repatriated 389 registered Afghan families to their homeland from Pakistaninfo-icon since March 1.

After the winter break, 1,528 individuals were voluntarily sent to Afghanistaninfo-icon from Pakistan, UNHCR said in a statement on Tuesday.

The voluntary repatriation operation had been suspended for the winter period from December 1, 2018, until February 28 this year.

Of the 1,528 refugees, 1,485 were entitled to cash assistance, with the remaining 43 getting aid in the past. The returnees received a cash grant of around $200 per individual upon arrival at one of the three encashment centres in Afghanistan.

The UNHCR had been operating two voluntary repatriation centres (VRCs) in Quetta, and Nowshera, for refugees ready to return to Afghanistan.

Families who wanted to repatriate were de-registered, presented identity cards and Proof of Registration (PoR) cards at VRCs.
