KUNDUZ CITY (Pajhwok): Some traders and government officials in northern Kunduz province on Wednesday expressed their deep concern over insecurity on the highway to Sher Khan Port, calling for more check-posts on the route.

Masood Wahdat, an official at the Commerce Department, told Pajhwok Afghan News the security situation on the Kunduz-Sher Khan port highway was deteriorating with each passing day. If urgent steps were not taken, people would face serious problems, he warned.

The official said: “Insecurity has had a negative impact on businesses. If the situation continues, traders may be forced to withdraw their investments from Kunduz and shify their capital to neighbouring Tajikistan.

Farid Ahmad, a local businessman, told Pajhwok last week some unidentified gunmen attacked his truck laden with trade items. He saud the assailants would have hijacked the truck if it had not sped away.

A number of others traders hold similar views and want the government to ensure the highway’s security on a priority basis to instill a sense of confidence among the business fraternity..

On the other hand, police chief Col. Manzoor Stanikzai told Pajhwok he would take up the issue at a security meeting soon. He assured all possible measure would be taken to secure the highway.
