1st US Talib set to be freed from 17 years in jail

KABULinfo-icon (Pajhwok): Branded the first American Talibinfo-icon, John Walker Lindh is all poised to walk out of jail after 17 years in imprisonment.

He was captured fighting alongside the Talibaninfo-icon by the erstwhile Northern Allianceinfo-icon in November 2001 in Afghanistaninfo-icon.

Portrayed as Detainee 001 in the US War on Terror, Lindh was originally sentenced to years in jail, according to AFP.

But the 38-year-old is going to be freed today (Thursday) -- three years before completing his term -- from a prison in Indiana for his good conduct.

He reportedly embraced Islam at age 16 and travelled in 1998 to Yemen to study Arabic. He came back home for several months, but returned to Yemen in 2000 before going to Pakistaninfo-icon.

In mid-2001, joined forces with the Taliban's against the Northern Alliance. Following the US invasion, Lindh was captured by Northern Alliance forces on November 25.

On his return to the US, the bearded man was charged with terrorism and conspiracy to kill Americans.

In July 2002, he pleaded guilty to illegally aiding the Taliban and carrying weapons and explosives.
