KABULinfo-icon (Pajhwok): The number of illegal Afghan migrants in Turkey -- a gateway to Europe -- has increased, says Interior Minister Süleyman Soylu.

Around 41,192 migrants arrived from the war-hit country in the first five months of the current year, Dauly Saba quoted the minister as saying.

If them, 20,558 were deported, Soylu said, calling the number of deportees unprecedented at the global level.

The new influx of unlawful migrants from Afghanistaninfo-icon represents a sudden surge in the spring of 2018, with about 18,000 intercepted in a matter of months.

In 3017, the minister recalled, some 45,000 Afghan migrants were intercepted. The total number of Afghan migrants reached 100,000 last year.

The surge has been linked to the deteriorating situation in the country, including widespread poverty and growing human smuggling.
