Afghanistan outclassed by England in warm-up

Afghanistan outclassed by England in warm-up

May 28, 2019 - 08:43

KABULinfo-icon (Pajhwok): In their final pre-Worldinfo-icon Cup warm-up match, hosts England outclassed Afghanistaninfo-icon by nine wickets at The Oval on Monday, the BBC reported.

Put in to bat first, the visitors struggled with the willow as their top order collapsed like a house of cards. However, Mohammad Nabi and Noor Ali Zadran exhibited somewhat resistance.

Nabi chipped in with 44 while Zadran scored 31 to lend Afghanistan’s total somewhat respectability. Dawlat Zadran remained unbeaten at 20. Thanks to their contributions, the visitors were able to reach 160 in the 39th over.

Afghanistan lost four wickets in the space of only eight deliveries. Hashmatullah Shahidi (19) and Najibullah Zadran (1) ran themselves out, mounting pressure on their side.

Joe Root, with a mix of off-spin and leggies, claimed three wickets for 22. In what looked a clinical bowling assault, Jofra Archer also claimed three scalps.

In a ruthless display of aggressive batting, opener Jason Roy struck an unbeaten 46-ball 89, including 11 boundaries and four sixes. Joe Root remained not out on 29 as the hosts raced to the target with 32.3 overs to spare.

Afghanistan’s skipper Naib said after the match: "We didn’t take responsibility with the bat at the start of the day. England bowled really well, so credit to the bowlers…”

He acknowledged the opposition played tremendous cricket and the Afghans would learn from that in rectifying their mistakes in the batting department.
