KABULinfo-icon (Pajhwok): The Afghanistaninfo-icon Chamber of Commerce and Industry on Wednesday organized a day-long workshop for businessmen and the private about increasing exports to Europe and elevating products’ quality.

Shafiqullah Ataee, ACCI deputy technical and policy director, said the purpose of the workshop was to promote awareness regarding rules, regulations and standards of exports to countries who were members of the EU.

He said Europe remained more suitable market for Afghan products but due to not meeting some standards and low quality, Afghan products were unable to seize market there. “We annually export goods worth $20 million which is inadequate,” he said.

Attae said the lack of a system to ensure the quality of products and their healthiness were a major challenge for Afghan products therefore the export volume of Afghan products was low.

Dry fruits, handicrafts, marble and saffron are mostly exported to Europe from Afghanistan.

Zabihullah Mudabir, a senior Commerce and Industry Ministry official, said today’s workshop was vital for private sector and said it would help improve the quality and volume of exports to foreign countries.

“Unfortunately, Afghanistan’s exports to foreign countries are low, with $20 million worth of exports annually going to Europe while there is an opportunity to expand the level of exports to Europe,” he noted.
