Denmark may deport Afghan woman with dementia

Denmark may deport Afghan woman with dementia

May 30, 2019 - 08:55

KABULinfo-icon (Pajhwok): Denmark may deport an elderly Afghan woman suffering from dementia after the rejection of her final appeal for asylum, a media report says.

June 4 will be a day of reckoning for Zarmena Waziri, 72-year-old refugee, who has been directed to report to a Denmark deportation centre.

The New York Times reported on Wednesday the Afghan woman, who had long been a champion of womeninfo-icon’s rights, lived with her daughter Marzia.

With the dismissal of her plea, she has been denied the right to stay in Denmark. She could not meet the immigration ministry’s requirement of producing a doctor's diagnosis to grant her humanitarian asylum.

Since Waziri is not a Danish citizen, she cannot avail herself of the country's healthinfo-icon services without paying a steep price of around $13,500, according to Marzia.

Marzia warned her mother’s deportation to Afghanistaninfo-icon would amount to a death sentence. “She’s in bed 99 percent of the time. She can’t do anything.”
