KABULinfo-icon (Pajhwok): The US special envoy for Afghanistaninfo-icon is embarking on a six-nation visit to drum up support for peace talks with the Talibaninfo-icon.

The two-week swing through the region would take Zalmay Khalilzad to Afghanistan, Belgium, Germany, Pakistaninfo-icon, Qatar and the United Arab Emirates.

In a statement, the State Department said the diplomat would consult with the government in Kabul and meet other Afghans, including representatives of civil societyinfo-icon and womeninfo-icon’s rights groups.

He would resume negotiations with members of Taliban’s political office in Doha before trying to muster international support for the Afghan peace process.

In Brussels, Berlin, Islamabad and Abu Dhabi, Khalilzad will work to gain more global backing for the Afghan peace plan.

The US-Taliban talks have so far been focused in facilitating a withdrawal of foreign troops and guarantees from the rebels not to allow the use of Afghan soil for terrorist activities.

The Taliban’s refusal to negotiate with President Ashraf Ghani's government or announce a ceasefire has been a sticking point in the talks.

Khalilzad would encourage all parties to work towards intra-Afghan negotiations that led to a final peace settlement, the State Department said.
