Growers complain of dipping watermelon prices

FARAH CITY (Pajhwok): Farmers in western Farah province complain of low watermelon prices as one kilogram of the summer fruit accounts for only two afghanis.

Ahmad Shah, a resident of Pushtroad district, told Pajhwok Afghan News he had cultivated watermelon on eight acres of land. He suffered a big loss as prices dipped.

Shah grumbled he could not even transport the watermelon to Farah City because the very low prices. He put the transportation cost per kilogram at one and half afghani.

“Several growers have collected their yield raw and sent it to neighbouring provinces. They sold their fruit at good prices and met their expenses,” Shah informed.

A number of other farmers also complained of dirt-cheap watermelon prices. They could not even meet the expenses incurred on cultivating the fruit.

Agricultureinfo-icon Director Abdul Manan Matin linked the low prices of watermelon to the early arrival of the crop as a result of hot weather in the province.

During the same period last year, the prices of watermelon had decreased to four afghanis in Farah.

According to Matin, Farah produced about two million tonnes of watermelon, cucumber, tomato and other crops annually.

The produce is sent to Herat, Helmand, Nimroz, Kandahar, Ghazni, Kabulinfo-icon, Balkh, Badghis and other provinces of the country.
