9 killed, 12 injured as bomber hits police vehicle in Jalalabad

Jun 13, 2019 - 17:59

JALALABAD (Pajhwok): A suicide bomber on foot targeted a police vehicle in this capital city of eastern Nangarhar province on Thursday, killing at least nine people, including two children, officials said.

The attacker set off his explosives as an Afghan local police (ALP) vehicle was passing through a residential area in Jalalabad at about 4:15pm, the governor’s spokesman.

Attaullah Khogyani said 12 other people were injured, including three children, in the blast that targeted an ALP team leader, Zalmay, who was among the dead. Zalmay was ALP team leader for Chaparhar district.

The attack took place in Khalis Fameel area in the limits of the sixth police district of Jalalabad, said Khogyani, adding the dead included two children and four policemen.

He said 12 injured people, including three police and three children, had been shifted to hospital.

Nangarhar police spokesman Faridullah confirmed the casualties.

Ahmadullah, who was injured in the blast, told Pajhwok from his bed in Jalalabad zonal hospital that he owned a shop in the area and the blast took place when a police vehicle was passing by.

No group has so far claim responsibility for the attack, but Islamic State or Daesh group has recently carried out a series of such attacks in the city.

Meanwhile, President Ashraf Ghani strongly condemned the attack in a statement issued from the Presidential Place in Kabulinfo-icon.

Ghani, who is currently in Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan, to attend the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) meeting, said those who rejected the peace proposal of religious scholars and the sermon at the Harmin Sharifin were responsible for the deadly attack.

“Terrorists who want to hide their defeat at the hands of our brave security forces have opted to target innocent civilians.”
