Nangarhar records surge in watermelon yield

JALALABAD (Pajhwok): The watermelon yield has surged in eastern Nangarhar province this year, but marketing of the summer fruit remains a problem for growers.

Zar Alam, a farmer who cultivated watermelon on state-owned land based on a lease agreement, said the yield of the fresh fruit was considerable this year, but marketing facilities were far from satisfactory.

Safiullah, a resident of the Gardi Ghaus area of Momand Dara district, called watermelon was a good alternative to poppies. He, however, urged a good market for the crop.

Zarshad, another grower, said: “Merchants buy a seven-kilogram watermelon bag for 50 Pakistani rupees. This amount is not enough to meet the expenses incurred on the crop.

“The agricultureinfo-icon department should help growers find a profitable market for our crops,” he said, asking the authorities concerned to address the issue on a priority basis.

Other farmers held similar views in this regard.

Director of Agriculture, Irrigation and Livestock Zabihullah Hassanzai told Pajhwok watermelon had been cultivated on 26,000 acres of land in 11 districts this year.

The yield was recorded at 99,000 metric tonnes, showing a surge. He said they were working with the Ministry of Economy on a proper plan to find a good market for the produce.
