Talks on roadmap for return of Afghan refugees today

Jun 17, 2019 - 11:14

PESHAWAR (Pajhwok): Officials from Afghanistaninfo-icon, Iran, Pakistaninfo-icon and the UN are set to meet on the repatriation of regugees in Islamabad today (Monday).

The four-way meeting would prepare a roadmap for the repatriation of millions of Afghan refugees from Pakistan and Iran.

Pakistan’s Ministry of States and Frontier Regions (SAFRON) said representatives of the UN refugee agency would also attend the daylong meeting.

Afghan Minister for Refugees and Repatriation Syed Hussain Alemi Balkhi and Iran Deputy Minister of Interior Hossein Zolfaghari are in Islamabad to take part in the talks.

After their arrival in Islamabad on Sunday, the Afghan and Iranian ministers met separately with SAFRON Minister Shehryar Khan Afridi and discussed matters related to the quadripartite meeting.

Indrika Ratwatte, director of the Bureau for Asia and the Pacific, UNHCR Geneva, has also been invited to the meeting that will review progress in implementing the solutions strategy for Afghan refugees.

Around 1.4 million registered Afghan refugees, with Proof of Registration (PoR) cards, are currently living in Pakistan.

In September 2018, the Pakistani government extended the stay of the refugees until June 30, 2019.

Additionally, Pakistan has nearly 880,000 Afghan refugees who were documented in 2018 but they do not have PoR cards.
