Women harassment: Awareness programs kick off in Jawzjan

SHIBERGHAN (Pajhwok): After receiving several complaints, the Ministry of Justice (MoJ) has launched awareness creating programs to help control growing harassment of womeninfo-icon in Shiberghan, the capital of northern Jawzjan province.

Jameela Abbas, a resident of Shiberghan, said: “Unfortunately even today women in our societyinfo-icon have been the victim of sexual harassment in physical, verbal and other forms and they have no access to their basic rights which badly affect their lives,” she said.

She said women suffered a lot at the hands of harassers and they had often been isolated in the society.

Sexual harassment against women and their deprivation of their basic right often forced the gender not to take active part in social activities and discouraged them to be an active member of society. 

Mursal, another resident of Shiberghan, said incidents of sexual harassment were linked to internal environmentinfo-icon of families where they failed to properly bring up their children and show them ethics and manners.

She said women mostly became victims of violence and were deprived of their rights in families dominated by uneducated men.

Justice Department Director Syed Mohammad Jafar Misbah said challenges for women were greater in Afghanistaninfo-icon because of multiple crises.

He hoped public awareness schemes in Jawzjan would help reduce violence against women and their sexual harassment, but in order to completely eradicate this culture, there was need for long-term programs.
