Afghanistan's World Cup campaign descends into chaos

Afghanistan's World Cup campaign descends into chaos

Jun 19, 2019 - 15:45

KABULinfo-icon (Pajhwok): Afghanistaninfo-icon cricket coach Phil Simmons on Wednesday took exception to his criticism and openly lashed out at chief selector Dawlat Ahmadzai after the minnows lost all five group games in the ongoing Worldinfo-icon Cup.

Ahmadzi believes the coaching team is at fault and has blamed the coaching staff for the five successive defeats suffered by the team at the start of the competition, the latest of which came to England at Old Trafford on Tuesday.

The former bowler believes the backroom staff, led by former West Indies allrounder Simmons, has failed to prepare the team properly for the country's second appearance in the 50-over competition.

In response, Simmons, 56, took exception to the criticism and pledged to reveal all about Ahmadzi's own influence on proceedings, including the details regarding the decision to replace Asghar Afghan as captain less than two months before the tournament.

"I am in the middle of a World Cup and trying to get our team to perform to the level we expect," Simmons, who will leave his role at the end of the tournament, wrote on Twitter.

“But at the end of the World Cup I will tell the Afghanistan people  about the part that Dawlat Ahmadzai had to play in our preparation and his part in the dismissal of Asghar Afghan.

Asghar was replaced as captain of the team in all three formats and replaced by Gulbadin Naib for the World Cup in April, a decision which was questioned by a number of senior players.
