HERAT (Pajhwok): Residents of western Herat province on Thursday said the ongoing crisis in the Wolesi Jirgainfo-icon over the speaker election had badly damaged the august house’s reputation among masses.

A number of residents in Herat City gathered in front of the Governor’s House and demanded the lawmakers end their dispute and confrontation and resolve the problem.

They said physical clashes and verbal exchanges had badly damaged the value and honour of the lower house among people and asked the government close the doors of the Wolesi Jirga.

A reliable source within the government said that President Ashraf Ghani had warned lawmakers to end their differences within a week otherwise the doors of the Wolesi Jirga would be shut, but Presidential Spokesman Mohammad Haroon Chakhansuri rejected this claim.

Waheed Ahmadi, one of the protesters, said: “The differences among lawmakers never represent the people. These lawmakers have earned a bad name to Afghanistaninfo-icon due to their unending differences.”

Mohammad Shakib Pardesi, another protester, said public representatives in the lower house no more enjoyed public support because they destroyed the house with their behavior in the past 40 days.

Differences amnong lawmakers could not be resolved over the speaker’s position during the past 40 days, and sessions of the house often ended without any agreement on the issue.
