Hundreds of Helmand residents demand ceasefire

LASHKARGAH (Pajhwok): Hundreds of tribal elders, religious scholars, civil societyinfo-icon activists and People’s Peace Movement (PPM) members in southern Helmand province have demanded the government and the Talibaninfo-icon agree to ceasefire.

The gathering in Lashkargah, the provincial capital, late on Saturday was addressed by PPM leader Iqbal Khyber, who said the ongoing war had no purpose except killing of Afghans and destruction of the country.

He said: “Due to the ongoing conflict, thousands of Afghans have lost their lives, therefore we should not miss the current peace chance.”

He said he had traveled to many parts of the country and everywhere people asked him to continue serious efforts for lasting peace in the country.

Maulviinfo-icon Abdul Hamid Helmandi, said Islam ordered peace and measures should be taken against those showing opposition to the divide order.

He said, “Peace is respect, honor, progress and humanity and war only brings instability and disaster to a nation.”

Meanwhile, Nazar Mohammad Rodi, Helmand civil societies coordination head, told the gathering that foreigners could not bring peace to the country and Afghans should to take measures on their own in this regard.

Zulikha, not a real name, said she had endured a lot of troubles due to the ongoing decades conflict in the country.

She said, “Because of the current war, many other womeninfo-icon like me have faced troubles.”

A number of other participants of the gathering held similar views and demanded truce from the government and Taliban at the earliest possible.
