KABULinfo-icon (Pajhwok): US Ambassador John Bass has hailed the progress of media and journalism in Afghanistaninfo-icon as a testament to gains of the past 18 years.

In a tweet, the US envoy said: “Afghanistan’s vibrant media is a testament to the gains of the last 18 years. Journalism is not a crime; it is a valued public service to the worldinfo-icon.”

“We call on the Talibaninfo-icon to stop threatening Afghan journalists. More violence against journalists or civilians will not bring security and opportunity to Afg, nor will it help the Taliban reach their political objectives,” he noted.

On Monday, the free media-supporting organisation in Afghanistan, Nai, said violence against journalists declined by 50 percent in the first six months of the current year, but insecurity and lack of access to information still posed challenges to media workers.

MujibKhilwatgar, executive director of Nai, presented a report about violence against journalists during the first six months of 2019 in Kabul.

He said violence against journalists declined by 50.1 percent in the period that saw Nai register 35 cases of violence against media workers, including five murders.
