KUNDUZ CITY (Pajhwok): The voter registration process could not be conducted in four districts of northern Kunduz province owing to insecurity, the Independent Election Commission (IECinfo-icon) regional office said on Wednesday.

Nooruddin Fitrat, IEC head for Kunduz province, told Pajhwok Afghan News the IEC on June 8 announced launching a 20-day voter registration process for the Sept 28 presidential election nation-wide.

However, he said over the past two weeks they had not been able to conduct the voter registration process in Qala-i-Zal, Kalbat, Gul Tapa and Aqtash districts of the province.

Fitrat said the issue had been shared with the provincial military council to move the voter registration centers from these districts to secure places.

“Security forces have to take measures for people’s security until the election time,” he added.

Samiullah, a resident of Gul Tapa district, told Pajhwok that the government should conduct the voter registration process in their district.

He said: “It is an excuse by IEC officials that there is insecurity and they cannot conduct the process.”

According to him, a majority of the district residents had not registered due insecurity in the district in the last election.

Amruddin Wali, a member of the Provincial Council, expressed his deep concern over the issue and said: “Everyday people ask about the voter registration process, so the government should take the issue seriously.”

However, police spokesman Sarwar Hussaini said there were security threats in the mentioned districts and IEC officials could start the voter registration process.

He said efforts were underway to remove security threats in some parts of these districts soon.
