JALALABAD (Pajhwok): The Independent Election Commission (IECinfo-icon) regional office in eastern Nangarhar province said on Wednesday it has so far registered around 16,000 people as voters in the province.

Zabihullah Wagari, IEC head for Nangarhar, told a gathering about coordination between elections-related institutions in Jalalabad, the provincial capital, that around 13,000 people have so far registered as voters and another 3,000 changed their names and locations in the province.

He said, “There has been no security incident or threats as security forces have taken necessary measures in this regard.”

Humira Rafi, the Provincial Council secretary, she termed the ongoing voter registration process as good but insisted registration employees should work carefully this time.

She said last time most of people missed casting their votes due to their wrong registration at voter registration centers.

Meanwhile, Free and Fair Election Foundation of Afghanistaninfo-icon (FIFA) representative in Nangarhar Asadullah Larawai said the IEC had not appointed deserving individuals for the registration process. He said even some the workers could write.

He also accused IEC local officials of not sharing information with election watchdogs.

The IEC on June 8th announced launching a 20-day voter registration process for the Sept 28 presidential election nation-wide.

Nangarhar IEC officials said they recently conducted the voter registration process in Shirzad district after some delay.

Currently, 28 voter registration process centers are operating in the province and six of them are in Jalalabad.
