Torkham border briefly closed after verbal brawl

PESHAWAR (Pajhwok): The Torkham border crossing briefly remained closed on Tuesday when Pakistani and Afghan guards had testy exchanges.

Cross-border movement was suspended for some time in the wake of a verbal clash, with local officials refusing to share details of the sordid incident.

Security sources and witnesses told Pajhwok Afghan News traffic was restored after intervention from senior officials from both sides.

The border crossing stayed shut for at least 45 minutes, a political administration official said, adding the dispute arose over shifting of patients.

The incident occurred when Afghan forces, dressed in plainclothes and accompanied by an ailing relative, tried to cross the zero point at the border.

After being stopped by Pakistani guards, the Afghan official asked his subordinates to close the border for all kinds of movement, the source revealed.

Due to the border closure, trade activities, including goods clearance, were delayed and passengers inconvenienced.

“We were kept waiting on the Afghanistaninfo-icon side of the border gate for nearly an hour,” said Gulab Khan, who teaches to a Kabulinfo-icon-based university.

Gulab urged the two neighbouring countries to avoid creating problems for passengers and prefer a negotiated solution to such altercations.
