US-Iran tensions may affect Afghanistan: Qureshi

PESHAWAR (Pajhwok): Pakistaninfo-icon has called for negotiations between Iran and the United States on defusing bilateral tensions, which could jeopardise the situation in Afghanistaninfo-icon.

“We want to see a negotiated way out of these tensions. I don’t think heightened tensions in the region will help the US or Iran,” the Pakistani foreign minister said in an interview.

Speaking exclusively to Eironews on Wednesday, Shah Mahmood Qureshi said: "I would err on the side of caution and would suggest restraint.”

On Monday, the Trump administration slapped sanctions on Iran's supreme leader and other top officials after Tehran downed an unmanned American drone.

"President Trump had made a commitment to the people of the US that he would pull out American troops from Afghanistan,” the foreign minister said.

With the presidential vote drawing closer in the US, Qureshi believed, Trump had held out the promise to withdraw troops from Afghanistan.

“But he also has to see the gains that have been made over the last so many years should not be lost," Qureshi argued. "I think starting another tension in that region can jeopardise a very delicate situation in Afghanistan.”
