JALALABAD (Pajhwok): Daesh or Islamic State group has been extensively suppressed in eastern Nangarhar province and its presence reduced to a few areas in some districts, the governor said on Thursday.

Governor Shah Mahmood Miakhel told Pajhwok Afghan News that after suffering defeat in districts, Daesh carried out some attacks in Jalalabad, the province capital, but efforts were underway to prevent such attacks.

Meanwhile,  residents and provincial council members said the government should establish permanent security posts and bases in districts, initiate development projects and create jobs for the youth for the sake of security.

Governor Miakhel said Daesh had reduced its activities to a few remote areas in four districts of the province. “The group has a presence in Baro Saro area of Achin district, Gurguri area of Haska Mina district and Owghaz, Agam and Wazir Tangi areas and in Chaparhar district, but we daily conduct operations against the insurgents.”

The governor said a special plan had been prepared to completely vanquish the insurgent group in all areas where they had a presence.

Miakhel acknowledged rebel attacks had surged in Jalalabad, but linked these incidents to Daesh defeat in districts.

Residents and their representatives say the government should launch reconstructioninfo-icon projects in districts, establish new check posts and bases and provide jobs and educationinfo-icon opportunities to the youth for permanent peace.

Provincial Council secretary Humira Rafi believed if the youths were provided education and jobs, they would stay away from joining the insurgents.
