HERAT CITY (Pajhwok): Some womeninfo-icon in western Herat province on Thursday expressed their deep concern over their weak say in the ongoing peace process.

A number of women held a gathering at the provincial Information and Culture Department and said women’s role in the peace talks remained ambiguous and they were seriously concerned about the future under Talibaninfo-icon.

Maya Bashir, a women rights activist, told the gathering that the ongoing peace process had been hasty and full of ambiguities that had raised women’s concerns.

Maryam Jami Alhamidi, another women rights activist, said they remembered women’s sufferings under the Taliban regime and were they now worried the freedom they gained in the past two decades would be lost again if the Taliban returned to power.

Tahira Popal, another activist, said, “If Taliban agree to without women’s agreement, I personally would not stay in Afghanistaninfo-icon.”

A number of other women expressed similar views and said the ongoing peace negotiations with the Taliban could lead to a retreat from achievements of the past two decades such as democracy, freedom of speech and women’s rights.
