Wolesi Jirga finally elects Mir Rahmani as speaker

KABULinfo-icon (Pajhwok): Ending a month-long deadlock, Wolesi Jirgainfo-icon members elected lawmaker Mir Rahman Rahmani as speaker of the lower house with a majority of votes on Saturday.

Since May 16, nearly a dozen candidates contested the speaker election but none was able to collect 50-plus one votes.

Finally on Saturday, Mir Rahmani, who had secured 123 votes and his rival Khan Mohammad Wardak 105 votes in the previous round, ran for the post.

In today’s Wolesi Jirga session, 245 lawmakers were present and each candidate was required to 123 votes to be elected to the speaker post.

Mir Rahman Rahmani received 136 votes and was elected as speaker of the house while Khan Mohammad Wardak secured 96 votes.

Malak Qais Noor Agha, temporary Wolesi Jirga speaker who announced the results of the voting, congratulated Rahmani on his election as speaker of the lower house.
