Taliban accused of destroying roads in Helmand

LASHKARGAH (Pajhwok): The Public Works Department head for southern Helmand province on Sunday accused Talibaninfo-icon militants of destroying and blocking roads against people in the province, an allegation the rebels rejected

Ahlullah Obaidi, the Public Works Department director, told Pajhwok Afghan News during an exclusive interview that Taliban militants recently destroyed roads and closed some others.

He said six kilometers of roads in Nad Ali, three kilometers of a road in Lashkargah and four kilometers of a road in Chahenjir locality had been destroyed by Taliban militants in recent past using tractors.

Obaidi said his department lacked enough budget to reconstruct all the destroyed roads but still they reconstructed 20 kilometers of roads.

Reconstructioninfo-icon works on roads in Nad Ali and Marja districts were underway after they were damaged by Taliban militants, Obaidi added.

Roohullah, a resident of Nad Ali district, told Pajhwok, “I have seen with my own eyes the Taliban militants destroying roads by tractors.”

Nasrullah, a resident of Dorahi area of Lashkargah, the provincial capital, also said the Taliban had demolished three kilometers portion of the road in their area.

However, the Taliban rejected the allegations and their spokesman Qari Yousuf Ahmadi told Pajhwok the Taliban never destroyed any road intentionally.

He said it was possible some roads might have been destroyed during clashes.
