JALALABAD (Pajhwok): The number of people brandishing illegal arms has decreased after being warned in Jalalabad city, the capital of eastern Nangarhar province, an official said on Tuesday.

Police chief Brig. Gen. Abdul Raqib Mubariz told Pajhwok Afghan News during an exclusive interview that police had already informed some political figures and powerful individuals not to keep illegal armed men at their homes, otherwise operations would be conducted against them.

He said after the warning, the number of illegal gunmen had reduced in Jalalabad city. He said initially police set up some check-points to arrest illegally armed men and later they decided plan to clearing operations against them.

“But now according to our information, the number of such gunmen has decreased in the city.”

The police chief also said corruption was being combated in police ranks and more than 20 policemen accused of corruption had been arrested and replaced.

Mubariz said big land grabbers had managed to escape the province but efforts were underway to detain all land grabbers.

He said the ongoing wave of insecurity in Nangarhar stemmed from lack of professional personnel but now they had devised a plan in this regard as well.
