KABULinfo-icon (Pajhwok): An Afghan man who fled conflict in his country six years ago has died at an Australian detention centre, a media report said on Monday.

The death of the 23 years old has triggered fresh concerns from rights campaigners about the indefinite arrests of asylum seekers by the Australian government.

Emergency services were called to the Melbourne Immigration Transit Accommodation Center, where the Afghan citizen died.

The Voice of America reported the cause of the man’s death was yet to be known, but police said the incident was not being viewed as suspicious.

As an unaccompanied minor, the Afghan national found his way to Australia in 2013. He had since been seeking legal help to obtain a residency visa.

The death should be officially investigated believe refugee campaigners, who claim many other Afghans are languishing for indefinite periods in Australian jails.
