9 Afghan workers killed in Pakistan coalmine fire

KABULinfo-icon (Pajhwok): At least nine residents of the Chak district of central Maidan Wardak province have died in a coalmine in the Balochistan province of Pakistaninfo-icon.

Ali Marjan Baheer, a former jihadiinfo-icon commander, told Pajhwok Afghan News the incident took place in Degari area.

He said the nine individuals were killed after a fire erupted inside the mine. The victims’ bodies were pulled out after 40 hours of strenuous efforts.

Marjan said all the victims were resident of Chak district and their bodies were transported home on Wednesday.

Pakistani media said the mine was 4,500 feet deep and 11 workers were stranded. Nine of them were killed and two others rescued.

Pakistan labor union head Sultan Lala said the government and coalmine owner should be held responsible for the incident.
