FAIZABAD (Pajhwok): Local officials say artificial jungles created in 2,000 hectares of land in four districts of northern Badakhashan province.

Moinudin Aini, director of Agricultureinfo-icon and Irrigation Department of the province told Pajhwok Afghan News the project is being implemented by Rupoee Institute in cooperation with the Worldinfo-icon Food Program in Wakhab ,Ashkasham ,Zibak and Waradoj districts.

The institute is using plants grown in the same areas for the artificial forests, he said.

He said that in each region, 10 to 20 hectares land would be allocated for single jungle as well as irrigation canals would be also created for their irrigation.

The program is a continuation of the project launched in 2003 by the Aga Khan Development Network (AKDN) in these districts, he said.

AKDN has previously grown jungles 120 hectares of land, which also host some wild animals.

Rafi Ghazizadeh, in charge of natural resources in the Ministry of the Agriculture, Irrigation and Livestock, who traveled to Badakhshan three days ago, for visiting jungles in the four districts directed local officials on the restoration of forests in their regions.

Meanwhile, deforestation is called one of the major challenges as large amount of timber wood is smuggled from Afghanistaninfo-icon into foreign countries annually. Over the last three decades, 50 percent of Afghanistan forests are cut for many different reasons.
