KABULinfo-icon (Pajhwok): The newly appointed Afghanistaninfo-icon Independent Human Rights Commission (AIHRC) chief on Thursday said the intensity of war in the country has restricted people’s access to their rights and paved the way for mass violations.

Shahrzad Akbar, the newly appointed AIHRC head, said this in her first remarks after her introduction by the president to her position.

On her twitter account, she said the AIHRC was one of the country’s important institutes and an achievement of the Constitution. “Working in this commission and leading it is my highest pride and great responsibility, “she added.

She also thanked the former head of the commission, Sima Samar, for her services and congratulated her on her new position as state minister for human rights and international relations.

“Last year when I sent my documents to the recruitment process for the commission, I was hopeful I would find a chance to serve in this important and national institute.”

“I am happy I will have the chance to work with a different and strong team that has theoretical and practical backgrounds in the human rights area,” she said.

She said working for human rights was a time-consuming and hard task and people of different classes were worried about their basic rights in future.

On the other hand, severity of the war in the country has limited people’s access to their rights and paved the way for grave violations leading to disasters.

“I hope my colleagues would be able in this critical time to support the basic rights of people of this country in important national process and we would be effective in giving access to human rights of people in every corner of the country. I took the responsibility of a heavy job and we would not succeed without the support of the people,” she said.

Shahrzad Akbar replaced Sima Samar as AIHRC on Wednesday following a presidential decree. Samar ruled the commission for around 18 years.
