UN vows to continue working closely with AIHRC

KABULinfo-icon (Pajhwok): The United Nations has signaled its interest in continuing to work closely with Afghanistaninfo-icon’s Independent Human Rights Commission (AIHRC). 

In a statement on Thursday, The UN Mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA) called the commission’s role in safeguarding human rights crucial, especially in the context of ongoing peace talks.

Earlier in the week, the Afghan government announced the appointment of new commissioners and Ms. Shaharzad Akbar as AIGTC chairperson.

The UN also paid tribute to outgoing Chairperson, Dr Sima Samar, who led the commission since its inception in 2002. Under her stewardship, the AIHRC engaged in advocacy in promoting respect for human rights and fundamental values.

“The AIHRC has played a critical role in transforming attitudes and promoting legislative and policy developments that have enhanced respect for the human rights of all Afghans,” UNAMA said.

As a member of the UN High-Level Advisory Board on Mediation, Dr Samar will continue to provide the secretary-general with advice on mediation initiatives and back such efforts around the worldinfo-icon.

The mission reiterated UN’s commitment to strengthening human rights and supporting a truly independent national human rights institution in safeguarding fundamental freedoms in Afghanistan.

“As peace efforts intensify, it is vital to protect and preserve the human rights of all Afghans, including womeninfo-icon and girls,” the statement concluded.
