Violence against journalists surges in Khost

Jul 18, 2019 - 16:23

KHOST CITY (Pajhwok): The first six months of 2019 were the worst for media and journalists in southeastern zone, says Afghan Journalist Protection Committee.

Saifullah Hayat, head of the committee in Southeastern Zone, said 45 cases of violence against journalists took place across the country during the first six months of the year, with 15 cases happening in the southeast.

Speaking to a press conference, he said the incidents registered included murder, injuring, physical attacks, threats and insult.

He said government officials were involved in 18 cases and the rest perpetrated by local strongmen, unidentified gunmen, militants and some other people.

The government should investigate cases in which its officials were involved, he said, urging US and Talibaninfo-icon not to cut deal on media freedom during their peace talks.

Speen Rawan Nawrozi, a local journalist, said the government had failed to investigate several violence cases against journalists. He urged the government to probe cases in which its servants were involved.

He urged the warning parties to pay serious attention to journalists’ lives and avoid making barriers to their work.
