KABULinfo-icon (Pajhwok): The US special representative for Afghanistaninfo-icon reconciliation says he will begin the 8th round of talks with Talibaninfo-icon soon.

On the other hand, well-placed sources claim an agreement between the Taliban and US representatives could be reached next month (August).

Ambassador Zalmay Khalilzad tweeted: “In addition to briefing management while in DC, I had the opportunity to consult with the ambassadors of Germany and India, and the foreign minister Kamilov of Uzbekistan on the Afghan peace process.”

He was getting ready to launch another Afghan peace mission in the hope of making further progress, the diplomat wrote.

At the latest round of talks, both sides pointed to progress and expressed hope for future headway. Khalilzad discussed four inter-connected parts with Taliban.

The topics included counter-terrorism assurances, troop withdrawal, intra-Afghan negotiations that lead to a political settlement and a permanent ceasefire.

Meanwhile, a credible government source told Pajhwok Afghan News that talks were almost complete between the US and Taliban and a draft agreement had been sent to the Afghan government.

The agreement would be inked between the two sides in August and direct talks between the Afghan government and Taliban would take place after the presidential election, the source said.
