GARDEZ (Pajhwok): Afghan Local Police (ALP) commander for Zurmat district of southeastern Paktia province was killed and nine others including children were wounded when a car bomb hit his vehicle on Sunday, officials said.

Deputy governor Abdul Wali Sahi told Pajhwok Afghan News that the car bombing hit ALP commander Ahmad Aziz’s vehicle in an area between University and Zonal hospital this afternoon.

He said Commander Ahmad Aziz was killed and nine others, including children, were wounded in the blast.

Abdul Halim, a student in Pakia University and an eyewitness, told Pajhwok that “We were at class when a powerful explosion rocked Gardez city, the provincial capital.”

An official, at the Zonal hospital, who wished to go unnamed, confirmed receiving nine injured people, including two children, from the blast site.

There was no immediate claim of responsibly for the blast.

A statement from the Presidential Palace media’s office received by Pajhwok quoted President Ashraf Ghani as calling attacks on civilians, educational institutes and public welfare organizations as crimes against humanity.

Condemning the car bombing in Paktia province, the president said terrorists could not stop the Afghan nation from pursuance of progress they were making towards the country’s development, success and rebuilding.
