FAIZABAD (Pajhwok): Talibaninfo-icon militants took control of the Karan wa Menjan district of northeastern Badakhshan province following a coordinated attack, officials said Monday.

Lt. Col. Asadullah Mohammadi, Badakhshan police chief, told Pajhwok Afghan News that the Taliban militants launched a complex attack on the district center late Sunday night.

He said Afghan forces retreated from the district center and the insurgents were currently in control of the town.

He said that police and uprising forces had currently gathered in Askarz area of the district.

Mohammadi said reinforcements from Kabulinfo-icon and Panjsher provinces had arrived in Anjuman area of the district for retaking control of the district center.

Abdullah Naji, a provincial council member, also confirmed the loss of the district and said the Taliban had intensified their attacks on the district center over the last six days.

He said besides the center, the Taliban also overran many areas including lapis lazuli mine.

“The local and central governments chose to ignore the Taliban attacks during the last six days and we are now seeing its result,” he said.

Abdul Rahim Farhat, Karan wa Menjan district chief, told Pajhwok that despite inflicting heavy casualties on Taliban suffered, the security forces were forced to retreat.

He said one uprising member was killed and three others wounded during the battle.

Farhat said a large number of reinforcements had arrived in Anjuman area but the Taliban had blown up all bridges leading to the district center and therefore the forces were slow to reach there.

“The Afghan forces are ready to attack on the Taliban and they would possibly take control of the district tonight”, he said.

The Taliban took control of the lapis lazuli mine in Karan wa Menjan district on July 16 and captured 30 security personnel and other workers of the mine.
