Badakhshan: Taliban set free 30 mine guards after a week

FAIZABAD (Pajhwok): Talibaninfo-icon militants have released 30 lapis lazuli mine security guards in Keran wa Menjan district of northeastern Badakhshan province after a week, an official said on Tuesday.

The militants took control of the lapis lazuli mine and captured 30 security forces manning the mine a week back.

Nek Mohammad Nazari, the governor’s spokesman, told Pajhwok Afghan News the Taliban freed the 30 security forces late Monday night after taking control of more parts of the district.

He said were effort were underway to retake some parts of the district from the Taliban militants soon.

Ahmad Javed Mujadidi, a member of the provincial council, told Pajhwok that Taliban militants took control of the mine and arrested 30 guards after a brief clash with security forces and in cooperation of Commander Abdul Malik in the area.

He said commander Abdul Malik had joined the Taliban and his son was captured by Taliban and he was among those released.
