JALALABAD (Pajhwok): Farmers in eastern Nangarhar say they are happy with this year’s bumper onion yield and reseaonable market price.

According to official date, 33,000 tonnes of onion have been harvested and most of the produce was consumed in the province.

The Rodat district is one of the places which provides good market for onion and farmers are really happy with the returns.

Jumma Gul, a resident of Mazenai area in Rodat district, said his onion crop was good this year and he earned a handsome amount of money.

“Half an acre of land produced above 550 kilograms of onion and the price per seven kilograms onion hovers 130 and 160 afghanis,” he said.

Another farmer, Esmatullah, complained that due to lack of cold storages, most of the onion produce was exported to Pakistaninfo-icon where the onions were kept in cold storages and imported when their demand was high.

Agricultureinfo-icon Director Samiullah Nasrat told Pajhwok Afghan News 33,000 onion had been collected mostly from Rodat, Chaparhar, Khewa, Sara Rud and Kama districts so far.

He assured that cold storages would be established in the province to presevee agricultural products.

He said most part of the onions was consumed in Nangarhar but some was exported to Kabulinfo-icon, other provinces and Pakistan.

Vegitable prducce has recently increased in Nangarhar but according to farmers they could not benefit fully from their harvests due to lack of market and other facilities.
