17 dead as Pakistan’s military aircraft crashes

Jul 30, 2019 - 11:23

KABULinfo-icon (Pajhwok): At least 17 people were killed as a military plane crashed into a residential area near the Pakistani garrison city of Rawalpindi on Tuesday.

Five crewmembers and 12 civilians lost their lives in the incident, according to Pakistani media reports.

The aircraft was on a routine training mission when it crashed and set off a fire that engulfed several houses.

It was not immediately clear what caused the crash or what kind of aircraft it was.

Rawalpindi, located near the capital Islamabad, is the site of the army's headquarters.

The plane, which was part of the Pakistaninfo-icon Army's aviation unit, came down in the early hours of Tuesday.

An army officer at the scene told Reuters that it "hit the side of the building and the structure it crashed into completely collapsed".

A crowd of local residents, some sobbing, gathered in the residential area where the incident occurred, reported AFP.
