UN supports intra-Afghan dialogue, says top envoy

KABULinfo-icon (Pajhwok): The UN secretary general’s special representative for Afghanistan Tadamichi Yamamoto on Tuesday said the start of intra-Afghan dialogue was important and the worldinfo-icon’s body supported the process.

Tadamichi Yamamoto made the remarks during a meeting with State Minister for Peace Affairs Abdul Salam Rahimi at the latter’s office, a statement from the Ministry for Peace said.

The two sides exchanged views on latest progress in the peace process, with Yamamoto reaffirming the UN support for the ongoing peace negations. The UN top diplomat termed intra-Afghan dialogue as crucial. 

Salam Rahimi also termed the UN’s role in the Afghan peace process as important and called the UN continued cooperation in this regard.

Rahimi had recently said direct talks between the Afghan government and Talibaninfo-icon could begin within two weeks.

Today he said such a meeting would be a crucial step forward in efforts to bring the war to an end in the country.

Also today, Presidential Palace spokesman Sidiq Sidiqi said a delegation would be appointed soon for peace talks with Taliban.

US Special Representative for Afghan Reconciliation Zalmay Khalilzad has been in Kabul for the past one week, visiting government and other political figures.
