KABULinfo-icon (Pajhwok): Ex-president Hamid Karzai neither peace efforts nor elections -- two key national processes -- were controlled by the Afghans.

Karzai told a media briefing in Kabul that none of the two major exercises was led or owned by Afghanistaninfo-icon. He suggested outsiders were in control of the peace and electoral processes.

He insisted the peace effort must be led and owned by the Afghans themselves. The process not be left to outsiders, he said. .

Karzai said though the Afghans backed the American push for for peace in their country, yet they would not accept an Islamabad-Washington deal on deciding Afghanistan’s fate.

“No doubt, we desire to have close relations with Pakistaninfo-icon,” the former president explained, arguing instability in Afghanistan won’t benefit the neighbors,

For the sake of regional stability, Karzai believed, the neighbors should support Afghanistan’s quest for peace.

The Afghans did not exercise control over electoral affairs, he claimed, saying foreigners, particularly the United States, controlled the process.

Given the current situation, in which peace should be prioritised, elections would do the country no good, the former head of state maintained.

A day earlier, US special envoy Zalmay Khalilzad said Kabul and Washington had agreed on next steps in the peace process.
