Thousands of US troops to leave under Taliban peace deal

KABULinfo-icon (Pajhwok): The United States would withdraw thousands of its troops from Afghanistaninfo-icon under a peace deal with Talibaninfo-icon militants in return for an end to hostilities, a media report said on Friday.

The agreement would require the Taliban to cut ties with Qaeda and, most important, a pledge to negotiate a final peace with the Afghan government, US officials told the Washington Post.

They said the agreement could cut the number of American troops “from roughly 14,000 to between 8,000 and 9,000.

US special envoy for reconciliation in Afghanistan Zalmay Khalilzad is all set to enter the eight and decisive round of peace talks with the Taliban in Qatar soon.
