GARDEZ (Pajhwok): Almost three-month back, the foundation stone of a sportsinfo-icon gymnasium was laid in the capital of southeastern Paktia province, but practically work on the project is yet to be started, athletes claimed Monday.

Around three months ago, Governor Shamim Khan Katawazi laid the foundation stone of the gymnasium.

Sportsmen complain about the delay in commencing practical construction work on the gym.

Sharif Mangal, Paktia Bodybuilding Federation head, told Pajhwok Afghan News all athletes were happy when the foundation stone of the project was laid.

He said they were now concerned about construction work quality of the gym because after the delay, if the construction work was launched in haste, it would have a negative impact on the construction quality.

He said: “We have told each governor to build us a sports place but none took practically steps to fulfill our wish.”

A number of other athletes held similar views and urged the government to initiate construction work on the project at the earliest possible.

Governor Katawzai said the gymnasium would be constructed at a cost of 70 million afghanis.

He said the construction work was delayed due to some technical issues in the project works.
