KABULinfo-icon (Pajhwok): The Ministry of Mines and Petroleum (MoMP) on Monday signed an agreement to modify contracts of nine marble reserves in western Herat province with private companies, an official said.

Nargis Nehan, Mines and Petroleum Minister, told reporters here that practical steps were being taken to resolve technical and legal issues in the marble contracts.

She said some of 147 small and big project had technical issues, rendering the companies unable to work in line with the original contracts.

These companies offered their recommendations in 2017 seeking changes in the contracts, the acting minister said, adding after evaluation by the ministry’s technical team, the companies recommendations were found legitimate.

She said conditions in the contracts were unmatchable in the current scenario and at a time the ministry lacked capacity to approve and draft small scale contracts.

Nehan said the companies would start investing in coal, marble and talc natural reservoirs in Nangarhar, Maidan Wardak and Ghazni provinces.

Wahid Malakzad, head of the Uqab Factory and head of Marble Factories Union, said around 42 marble factories had long stopped functioning in Herat province due to problems in the contracts. He said after the signing of modification agreement, the factories would resume their work.
