Aug 06, 2019 - 11:24

KABULinfo-icon (Pajhwok): Afghanistaninfo-icon’s noted cleric Sheikh Mohammad Asif Mohseni has passed away as a result of an illness.

After the establishment of a new democratic system in Afghanistan, Mohseni left active politics and instead continued teaching Jurisprudence at the Khatam Al-Nabiyeen seminary, founded in 2001.

Mohseni pursued studies in the holy city of Najaf in Iraq under Grand Ayatollah Abul Qasim Khoei, Mohsen al-Hakim and Abdul Ala Sabzwari.

Mohseni, who was the founder of the Islamic Movement of Afghanistan, was one of the prominent figures of Afghan resistance against the Soviet occupation.

Born in 1935 in southern Kandahar province, he was considered one the most powerful Shiite clerics in Afghanistan.
