Peace talks being undermined by continued attacks

KABULinfo-icon (Pajhwok): Afghanistaninfo-icon’s ambassador to the US says unabated Talibaninfo-icon attacks are undercutting the credibility of talks on ending the ongoing conflict in the country.

In a deadly attack on security forces in Kabul on Wednesday, the militants killed at least 14 people and wounded more than a hundred others.

The attack came hard on the heels of optimistic statements from US and Taliban negotiators regarding progress in the eighth round of talks in Doha.

In an interview with the Associated Press, Ambassador Roya Rahmani said a negotiated peace could not be enforced if the government was kept out of the loop.

Such attacks would spawn distrust of the parleys, which both sides say are about to yield an agreement and the eventual pullout of US troops, Rahmani said.

“It’s simply not understandable why somebody with the idea of peace in mind would like to continue killing people,” she remarked.

The diplomat believed that securing a ceasefire first could have would have instilled the trust needed for a successful peace process.

The ambassador deplored Taliban’s warning of attacking election campaign rallies. “It’s very unfortunate to hear that. What I can say —what I’ve heard from our people — is it angers them and motivates them even more to go to the polls.”
