Ghani orders probe into civilian casualties in Paktia

KABULinfo-icon (Pajhwok): National Security Council (NSC) on Thursday said President Ashraf Ghani has ordered an investigation about civilian casualties caused during an operation in Zurmat district of southeastern Paktia province.

On the second day of Eid ul Adha, on August 12, Afghan Special Unit Forces launched an operation in Zurmat district of Paktia province.

Afghan forces claimed they killed 11 militants during the operation while local people and the United Nations said those killed were civilians with some of them university students.

A statement from the NSC received by Pajhwok Afghan News said that a serious investigation was launched about recent operation in Zurmat district of Paktia following an order from the president.

The statement said that besides some Talibaninfo-icon fighters, a number of civilians also suffered casualties during the operation. National Directorate of Security (NDSinfo-icon) is ordered to try those military officials who were involved in the operation, the source said.

Those who found blamed during the investigation should be arrested immediately and faced with justice, the statement said.

NSC said that it was the government’s concentration to avoid civilian casualties and security organs were ordered to be careful during their operations.
