MAIMANA (Pajhwok): One child was killed and five others sustained wounds in a mortar strike which local residents blamed on security forces in Pashtunkot district of northern Faryab province on Friday morning, police said.

Faryab police spokesman Abdul Karim Yurash said Talibaninfo-icon militants fired mortars at civilians’ homes in order to defame security forces. As a result of the strike, he said, one child was killed and five children were wounded when the mortars hit their homes.

Khairullah, father of one of the wounded children, accused government security forces of firing the mortars in Chaqmaq village. He said one child was killed and six others were wounded in the incident. He brought four injured children to hospital.

Another person, Abdul Rahim, confirmed one child had been killed, but said seven other children had been wounded.

A Taliban official said the mortars were fired by government forces.

Emergency ward head at the civil hospital in Maimana, the provincial capital, Dr. Zia said they had been delivered four injured children and two of them were in critical condition.

Separately, a 40-year-old shopkeeper was gunned down by unknown assailants on the edges of Maimana on Friday, police said.
