KABULinfo-icon (Pajhwok): As many as 140 couples from deserving and poor families tied the knot at a mass marriage ceremony held under the aegis of a local charity foundation in central capital Kabul on Friday.

Organized by Hazrat Abul Fazl Abbas Charity Foundation, the mass-wedding ceremony kicked off at 5am Friday morning and would continue until late night, said Salam Khadimi, one of the organizers.

He said about eight thousands people were attending the ceremony that featured Islamic speeches, recitation of verses from the Quraninfo-icon and others.

He said the 140 couples had been unable to get married after their engagement years ago due to poverty. He said their foundation spent 50000 afghanis on the marriage of each couple.

Khadimi said the aim of the mass marriage was to help poor  and deserving couples tie the knot.

The Hazrat Abul Fazl Abbas Charity Foundation has been spearheading cultural and educationinfo-icon programs since its inception about six years ago. The foundation has so far arranged a dozen of such mass marriage events.
